How to Choose the Right Nail Shapes

vonya press on nails shape

Refer to the picture above. Nail shape is the first thing we need to consider before applying nail polish or polish powder. Whether we care about the shape of our nails or not, we need to trim them first. Let's take a brief look at press on nail shapes.

Square

Suitable for: Short nails or narrow nail beds.

Square nails have been popular since the 1970s. Its leading edge is flat with a straight sharp core. Because of the sharp corners, it's easier to split at the end, especially if you use your hands a lot or type a lot on the computer. Square corners increase the chances that your nails will get caught in something or break.

Squoval

Suitable for: Short nails or narrow nail beds.

Squoval shape is an alternative to the square. It became popular in the mid 90s. Princess Diana promoted the squoval look and turned it into a demure, feminine look. If you're going for a square look, we recommend you go for a squoval shape, as it won't be chipped or broken in the corners as often as a square shape.

Round

Suitable for: short or medium nails

The round shape, a classic shape, was a symbol of wealth in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At that time, people with clean nails were considered wealthy, and rounded nails were easy to keep clean. It starts with a straight edge, but curves at the edges to follow the natural shape of the fingertip.

Oval

Suitable for: short or medium nails

In addition to the tip of the nail, the oval shape of the nail should also pay attention to the side. Oval nails have a more extreme curvature than round nails, so it tends to make fingers look slimmer. The oval itself is more resistant to certain types of damage (which is why the Romans used arches to support their Bridges!). The oval distributes weight evenly, as well as other sudden impact forces, making it less likely to crumble and break. This shape is often confused with round and almond shapes. If you have a bit of length and are looking for minimal maintenance, this could be the shape for you!

Almond

Suitable for: Medium or long nails

The almond shape was very popular in the 1940s and 1950s. Almond nails need to be a certain length, so those who prefer short nails should avoid them. The nail is filed down along the sides and the wall tapers to a rounded end, similar to the shape of an almond. This shape is also best for those with thicker nails, which hold the structure in place. If you have brittle nails and want this shape, we recommend adding some structure to your nails with a gel manicure.

Coffin

Suitable for: Medium or long nails

Coffins nails have become a trend in recent years. In shape, it resembles a coffin, usually reserved for those who like acrylic and don't mind sacrificing a bit of function for drama. Given the shape and length of nails, this can be a hassle. Everyday tasks like typing on a computer or even picking up a pencil can be more difficult at first, especially if you're transitioning from short square, round, or squoval nails.

Stiletto

Suitable for: Medium or long nails

This shape looks like an almond, but it has a sharper tip. Because nails are sharper, they are more likely to break or chip. If you want a lasting nail shape, this stiletto shape nails not the shape for you.
